A minimum of 13 people lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major public works projects.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.

The president reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term ended the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its duties in national projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised significant questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party demanded an immediate suspension in the development and management of all such projects.

This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in total adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these vital initiatives.
