New research suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a major health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such drugs need to be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Users who have stopped the medication report a intense resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced something that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled a patient.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Use
Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
