The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a Latest Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The speculation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer featuring striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio warned that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This distinction hints that the team might be designing a real-time experience instead of another turn-based title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it sparked the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, player agency, and deep class systems—qualities that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities only possible by choosing a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also famously permissive, letting players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be solved in a variety of manners, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you recalled something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is precisely these elements that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can look forward to a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
